ILLEGAL GUNS BECOME
THE TARGET “Tell
Us Where They Are”
Winnipeg Crime Stoppers is targeting
handguns and firearms to get them off our streets. This major
new initiative of Winnipeg Crime Stoppers has been created in
partnership with the Province of Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg
and the Winnipeg Police Service.
Starting today, until the end
of June, Winnipeg Crime Stoppers will pay double the award money,
up to a limit of $2,000, for information resulting in illegal
firearms in Winnipeg being confiscated by police.
"Use
of illegal guns and violence has unfortunately been increasing
at an alarming rate in recent times," said Reg Parkin, Winnipeg
Crime Stoppers Chair. "Here is an opportunity to help do
something about this problem that will have direct benefits to
the Winnipeg Community."
Assistive funding from the province
helped create a campaign aimed at targeting illegal handguns. “The
province is pleased to support this campaign with $10,000 from
the Proceeds of Crime Trust Fund,” said Attorney General
Dave Chomiak. “We want to help get illegal handguns off
the streets of Winnipeg. Serious crime issues come from these
weapons. This campaign will build on other efforts to get at
the problem including the recent gun amnesty, provincial funding
for additional front line police officers and our support for
the Manitoba Integrated Organized Crime Task Force.”
Positive
support for the initiative has also come from both the City and
the Winnipeg Police Service. “The City of Winnipeg has
played a leading role in reducing crime and are providing the
Winnipeg Police Service with the resources and tools necessary
to create a safe city of opportunity,” said Winnipeg Mayor
Sam Katz. “This initiative will continue to build on the
success we have had and I hope will be a positive step in reducing
the number of illegal weapons in our city.”
"Even
one gun can devastate many lives” reasoned Winnipeg Police
Chief Keith McCaskill. “That's why we've directed a targeted
enforcement campaign to get illegal guns off our streets."
Working
in unity, Winnipeg Crime Stoppers is spearheading a campaign
targeting illegal guns. Winnipeg media are supporting the campaign
through messages on interior and exterior transit signs, vertical
out door billboards, TV and radio re-enactments, newspaper ads,
plus 11x17" window posters. The window posters will be distributed
to store fronts and businesses throughout the west, central,
exchange and north end areas.
Businesses can show support in
requesting and displaying a window poster by phoning distributers
in their area: Downtown Biz at 958- 4627, West End Biz at 954-7900,
the North End Community Ambassadors at 582-4796, or the Exchange
Biz at 942-3059.
Winnipeg Crime Stoppers is very effective
in getting results and is hoping for a total "buy-in" support
from Winnipeg citizens, businesses, and the media in forwarding
this message and helping to curb the influx of illegal guns and
violence in our community.
Citizens can now leave secure anonymous
tips on the web at winnipegcrimestoppers.org, or by text messaging “TIP170” plus
your message to “CRIMES” (274637), or by phone at
786-TIPS (8477).
Crime Stoppers pays up to $2,000 for tips
that lead to the solution of a crime. Anonymity is guaranteed.
Tipsters never have to reveal their identity. The Supreme Court
of Canada supports Crime Stoppers protection of tipster’s
identity.
